November 4 Psalm 31:24
Be strong and take heart,
all you who hope in the Lord.
My mother, who lived to the ripe old age of 93 used to say, “Getting old is not for the faint of heart.” At 74 I know what she meant. Jerome, a good friend of mine once said, “You know, when we were younger we talked about women. Now we just share about bodily functions!”
Life has trials, tragedies, and disasters for most, if not all of us. I’ve had my share. I’ll spare you what my late wife would call “an organ recital.” Sufficient to say the minor struggles seem more frequent as I get older.
My faith tells me the Lord has been with me through all the trials. He didn’t take away the pain and suffering. Instead, He walked with me as one who has been there and knows there is Resurrection on the other side.
Scripture is one of my important coping aids to remind me to trust in the Lord for a positive outcome. Romans 8:28 in my favorite.
“All things work together for good for those who trust in the Lord.”
I would also often think “There is nothing so bad I can’t find a way to work it into a sermon.”
A close second coping skill is using a sense of humor. On my now multiple surgeries I always lighten the occasion by telling the nurses some of my favorite jokes. I like to say, “I’ll answer your questions if you answer mine…How many seconds in a year?”
The answer by the way is 12. January second, February……
Laughter is good medicine.
How do you trust in the Lord?
