Over the years many people have responded to an invitation to church by saying something like, “If I came to church the roof might cave in!” Once I gave a sermon to exaggerate how wrong this is. I made a giant fly swatter and ran around the sanctuary threatening to wack people with it.
Our God is first of all a God of Love, forgiveness and mercy. Think of St. Paul. He was on a mission to Damascus to arrest Christians when Jesus called him to be the apostle to the gentiles. The movie Oh God got it perfectly when George Burns as God calls John Denver’s character. He responds saying “I don’t even believe in you!” I resonate with it because almost the same thing happened to me!
