April 1 Joshua 10:25
“And Joshua said to them, ‘Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. For thus the LORD will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.’”
Commentary:
In this passage, Joshua addresses the Israelite commanders after a significant victory over five Amorite kings who had formed a coalition against Israel. Following their defeat, these kings were captured and brought before Joshua. He instructed his military leaders to place their feet on the necks of the subdued kings—a symbolic act demonstrating complete subjugation and victory over their enemies. This gesture was not meant as an act of cruelty but served as a tangible representation of God’s promise to deliver Israel’s adversaries into their hands.
Joshua’s exhortation, “Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous,” echoes the divine encouragement he himself received earlier in his leadership (see Joshua 1:9). By reiterating these words, Joshua reinforces a central theme: reliance on God’s strength leads to triumph over formidable foes. This message was intended to embolden the Israelites, assuring them that, just as God granted victory in this instance, He would continue to do so in future battles.
Spiritual Reflection:
This verse serves as a powerful reminder that believers are called to confront challenges with faith and courage, trusting in God’s unwavering support. The symbolic act of placing feet upon the necks of defeated kings can be seen as an illustration of overcoming the spiritual battles we face, emphasizing that through God’s power, we can gain victory over the obstacles and adversities that seek to hinder our spiritual journey.
Question for reflection
