Back in Elementary School
We learned about the Golden rule
Prayed when we began the day
I pledge allegiance we did say
We learned to always look both ways
We wrote with cursive script display
We dodged a ball and ran red rover
We rode our bikes and wished on clover
But later we saw many changes
The 60s came and rearranged us
Assassinations rocked the nation
Riots, marches, new temptations
Foreign wars our classmates died
Some protested asking why
Meanwhile mankind walked the moon
While Hendrix jammed a fancy tune
Some revolutions were progressive
Equality for all was more effective
Women gained a greater place
While opposites talked face to face
And now the years have passed along
Other wars have come and gone
Prayer is banned within our schools
And Under God ‘s no longer cool
Kids are eating soap for dares
Piercing places here and there
And toting guns to school for death
While we for horror hold our breath
The country’s evenly divided
Hardly any undecided
Black and blue lives seek acceptance
Fake News fact checks gain importance
Perhaps the future days will hold
Return to values we were told
Back in the days we were in school
And learned about the Golden Rule
