Characteristics of a Holy Life
A holy life is often characterized by a set of virtues, behaviors, and attitudes that reflect a deep commitment to spiritual principles and a relationship with the divine. To the extent we have developed a conscience most of us have a reasonably clear idea of the difference between good and bad behavior. However, once we commit our lives to Jesus and seek to follow The Way, most people realize we have much room for improvement toward a Holy Life.
Do not confuse this “working out our salvation with fear and trembling” with salvation itself. Jesus saved us on the cross. Yet if our behavior isn’t transformed as a consequence we haven’t taken our salvation seriously.
Consider these characteristics of a Holy Life.
1. Love and Compassion
•Holiness is first of all categorized by agape unconditional love. The Saints knew they were loved by God. His love and kindness flow out to others.
•Holiness underlies forgiveness and patience, even with those who may be difficult.
2. Humility
•Being humble can be complicated. It is not diminished by self-confidence. Yet it recognizes one’s limitations and dependence on the divine. Humility avoids pride and self-centeredness.
Much of life depends up “throwness”. That is things like I ate things that we have because of our natural abilities, our place of birth, and historical context. For example, my ability to sing well.
3. Purity
•Striving to live a life free from moral or ethical corruption.
•Maintaining integrity in thoughts, words, and actions.
4. Self-Discipline
•Exercising control over one’s desires and impulses.
•Practicing moderation and avoiding excess or indulgence.
Aiming up.
5. Devotion and Prayer
•Regularly engaging in prayer, meditation, or other spiritual practices.
•Dedicating time and energy to deepening one’s relationship with the divine.
6. Obedience to Divine Principles
•Living according to spiritual or religious teachings.
•Seeking to align one’s will with divine guidance rather than personal preferences.
7. Peacefulness
•Cultivating inner peace and avoiding conflicts or unnecessary arguments.
•Striving to be a peacemaker and promote harmony in relationships.
8. Generosity and Service
•Being generous with time, resources, and love.
•Serving others selflessly, particularly those in need.
9. Gratitude and Contentment
•Practicing gratitude for what one has, even in difficult situations.
•Finding contentment and joy in simple, everyday blessings.
10. Faith and Trust
•Having faith and trust in the divine, even when facing challenges or uncertainties.
•Demonstrating perseverance and hope.
Conclusion
These characteristics often form a foundation for a life that seeks spiritual growth, moral integrity, and meaningful relationships with others and with the divine. The hypocrisy of the Pharisees is always a dangerous temptation for those who seek to be Holy. Humility and love are paramount characteristics of Holiness.
