January 13 Isaiah 40:31
Isaiah 40:31 is a powerful and beloved verse, often quoted for encouragement and strength:
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (KJV)
Commentary:
1.“Wait upon the Lord”:
•This speaks of trusting in and patiently relying on God. “Waiting” here is not passive but active faith, involving prayer, hope, and dependence on His timing and will. Moreover, eagles will stand and wait for an updraft before taking off to soar upwards!
2.“Shall renew their strength”:
•Those who trust in God will receive renewed energy, both physical and spiritual. This renewal is a divine gift, allowing believers to persevere through challenges.
3.“Mount up with wings as eagles”:
•Eagles are known for their strength and ability to soar effortlessly above storms. This imagery reflects rising above life’s difficulties with God’s help.
4.“Run and not be weary; walk and not faint”:
•This highlights enduring strength for the journey of life. God empowers His people to keep moving forward, whether in moments of high energy (running) or steady progress (walking).
This reminds me of a sermon by The Rev. Jerry Kibarabara of Kenya. He said “God is never in a hurry but always on time!” Things go better when we wait on God’s timing.
This was rptrue for me recently as I was frustrated by his long it was taking me to get credentialed as a volunteer chaplain for Arkansas prisons. My wife told me to relax and wait. She was right. Soon after things fell into place.
How has this been true for you?
