Luke 7:50 March 4
he said to the woman, Your faith has saved you; go in peace.
Context
This verse concludes the powerful encounter between Jesus and the sinful woman who anointed His feet with her tears and costly perfume (Luke 7:36-50). She had entered the house of Simon the Pharisee, where Jesus was dining, and demonstrated profound love and repentance. While Simon looked down on her, Jesus saw her faith and forgave her sins.
Meaning and Theological Significance
1. Faith as the Means of Salvation
Jesus does not say that her love, actions, or tears saved her. He explicitly states that her faith has saved her. This aligns with the broader biblical teaching that salvation is by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). Her actions were an outpouring of that faith, not the cause of her salvation.
2. The Power of Jesus’s Forgiveness
Jesus’swords confirm that He has the authority to forgive sins. This was scandalous to the Pharisees, who believed only God could do so. Yet, Jesus repeatedly asserts His divine authority (Luke 5:20-24).
3. The Gift of Peace
Jesus tells her to go in peace, which implies more than just an absence of conflict. The Greek word for peace conveys wholeness, restoration, and reconciliation with God. The woman, once burdened by sin and shame, now walks in the peace of God’s grace.
Application
Faith, Not Works, Saves. Like the woman, we are not saved by our efforts but by trusting in Christ. Our love and devotion are a response to His grace.
No One is Beyond Redemption. This woman’s past did not prevent her from receiving Christ’s forgiveness. Likewise, no sin is too great for His mercy.
The Assurance of Peace. When Jesus forgives, He grants true peace, freedom from guilt and the security of God’s love.
This verse is a beautiful reminder that Jesus welcomes sinners with open arms, offering salvation and peace to all who trust in Him.
It’s what Paul calls the peace that passes understanding. When my first wife died I mourned for over a year. Yet in the midst of it I had that peace.
When have or do you have that kind of peace?
