March 8 Galatians 3:26

“For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.”

This verse emphasizes the central Christian doctrine of adoption into God’s family through faith in Jesus Christ. Paul is addressing the Galatian believers, who were being influenced by Judaizers—people who insisted that obedience to the Mosaic Law, particularly circumcision, was necessary for salvation. In contrast, Paul teaches that faith in Christ alone is what makes a person a child of God, not adherence to the Law.

Key Themes:

1. Sonship through Faith

Paul declares that all believers, regardless of ethnicity, social status, or background, are “sons of God” through faith in Jesus. This signifies a close relationship with God and access to the inheritance promised to His children (Romans 8:17).

2. Not by Works of the Law

The context of Galatians 3 contrasts faith and the works of the Law. Paul argues that justification comes solely by faith, not by observing Jewish customs. This aligns with his broader teaching in Ephesians 2:8-9, where he says salvation is by grace through faith, not by works.

3. Unity in Christ

In the next verse (Galatians 3:27-28), Paul elaborates that all who are baptized into Christ have put on Christ, meaning that earthly distinctions (Jew/Gentile, slave/free, male/female) do not define one’s standing before God. This underscores the inclusive nature of the Gospel.

Application:

• This verse reminds believers that our identity is found in Christ, not in legalistic religious practices or human distinctions.

• It encourages Christians to live with the confidence of being God’s children, assured of His love, guidance, and inheritance.

• It challenges the church to embrace unity in Christ, recognizing that faith, not background or works, defines true belonging in God’s family.

My bishop likes to say that the person you are speaking with is the most important person with whom Jesus wants you to be.  I have found this to be a transforming way of sharing with others.

Give it a try!
