March 9 John 6:35
“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.’”
This verse is a key part of Jesus’ discourse on being the Bread of Life, which takes place after the miraculous feeding of the five thousand (John 6:1-15). The crowd, having seen the miracle, seeks Jesus for more physical food, but He redirects their focus to something far greater: spiritual nourishment.
1. “I am the bread of life”
This is the first of Jesus’ seven “I am” statements in John’s Gospel, where He reveals His divine identity and mission. By calling Himself the “bread of life,” Jesus is declaring that He is the true source of eternal sustenance. Just as bread is essential for physical life, He is essential for spiritual life.
2. “Whoever comes to me shall not hunger”
Jesus invites all to come to Him, emphasizing that He alone can satisfy the deepest longings of the human soul. The hunger He refers to is not physical but spiritual—a longing for meaning, truth, and fulfillment that only God can provide.
3. “Whoever believes in me shall never thirst”
Jesus connects coming to Him with believing in Him. Just as water quenches physical thirst, belief in Christ brings complete spiritual satisfaction. This echoes His conversation with the Samaritan woman in John 4:13-14, where He speaks of giving “living water” that will never leave one thirsty.
Theological Significance
• Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment
This statement ties into the Old Testament, where God provided manna in the wilderness (Exodus 16). Jesus now reveals that He is the true bread from heaven, surpassing the temporary provision of manna with eternal life.
• Salvation through faith
The key action Jesus calls for is coming to Him and believing in Him. These are not about physical actions but about trusting in Him as the source of life.
• The sufficiency of Christ
This verse teaches that Christ alone satisfies the soul. No earthly pursuit—wealth, success, relationships—can fill the void that only Jesus can.
Application
• Seek Jesus not just for what He can give (blessings, provisions) but for who He is.
• Trust that in Him, your deepest spiritual needs are met—He is enough.
• Share this truth with others who are spiritually hungry and searching for lasting fulfillment.
This verse is a profound reminder that Jesus is not just a teacher or miracle worker—He is the essential sustenance for eternal life.
I’m currently on a low carb diet. Lord, do I miss a good piece of bread! How much more would I be suffering without Jesus, the Bread of Life! ? Thank you Lord I am not spiritually “starved”.
Dear reader I pray you be fed by Jesus today.
