Spiritual Gifts

Spiritual Gifts are the subject of this sermon. They were poured out upon the church on Pentecost. When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers gathered in one place. Suddenly a sound came from heaven. It was like a strong wind blowing. It filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw something that looked like fire in the shape of tongues. The flames separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to speak in languages they had not known before. The Spirit gave them the ability to do this. Acts 2;1-3 NIRV The Nine Primary gifts of the Spirit can be summed up as the power to Say Know and Do.   Let’s take them in turn. Speaking in tongues is the gift of being able to speak a language you don’t know. This is what we first read about in Acts. The apostles speak to the gather crowd. There are many people present in the city from different areas. They hear the message from the preaching in their own Languages.  In the last century there was a modern outbreak of the Gifts in Pentecostal and Charismatic churches. The gift of interpretation is needed when there is no one present that speaks the Language of the words spoken in tongues. Skeptics often notice that the interpretation given seems longer or shorter. The explanation is that interpretation is not a translation but rather a sort of summary. Prophesy is a word from the Lord. It can either be a for telling of the future or a forth telling message for the present. For example either “in the coming days ..” or “Thus sainthood the Lord …..”   The gift of knowledge is when the Lord reveals information to a person. It could be in the form of a literal word. It might be a vision. It could be a symbol that needs understanding. The gift of wisdom is the ability to know what to do. To be able to make a wise decision or take the best action. The gift of discernment is the ability to distinguish what is of human origin, from the Devil, or from the Lord. The gift of healing is the power to successfully pray for someone to recover from an illness. The gift of faith is the ability to know that something can be done and to work towards its accomplishment with confidence. The gift of miracles is the ability to do the seemingly impossible.   It important when deciding if you or someone else has any of the gifts to consider these three things: Giftedness, Effectiveness, and Receptiveness. First when the gift is manifested does it come forth easily. If it seems forced it probably is not. Second, if the gift is the real thing it works. For example if the is no healing there is no gift. Thirdly is the operation of the gift well received by the community in which it is manifested.
