That’s not who we are?

That’s not who we are?             It’s a phrase we have heard of late many times.

Who are we to rise above
Can we not hate as well as love
Is there something in the Land
To prevent a violent stand

Who among us can truly say
That passions might grab someday
Our shadows are sometimes possessed
And we escape only if blessed

Did not our citizens pillage, loot
Tear down streets nor give hoot
Whose lives they ruined or business burn
Because they believed it was their turn

Do we not jail more in one state
Than other countries incarcerate
Are there not homeless in our streets
So many that we fear to greet

Are there not scams and get rich schemes
That fill our phones price gouge our dreams
And lesser faults like cutting lines
Cheating spouses not paying fines

It’s not that we are good or bad
We’re human fallible foolish sad
And yet this sentiment is true
If only with a different view

That’s not who we strive to be
It’s not our goal our liberty
At best we hope justice is fair
That we might always help and care

In this day when who we are
Is not too close and rather far
From who we hoped that we could be
May we confess more honestly

That’s not who we strive to be!
A bastion of democracy
Where free and fare are common place
And losers concede without disgrace
