The Importance of Pentecost

The Importance of Pentecost

Introduction to Pentecost

Pentecost is a Christian festival celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, marking the birth of the Church.  The Jewish celebration of this day is called The Festival of Weeks. It is celebrated 50 (pente) days after Passover.

Leviticus 23:15-16 ‘From the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, count off seven full weeks. 16 Count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the Lord.

So just as Jesus is the new Passover Lamb, 50 days later The Holy Spirit is the new harvest of God’s bounty,

The Fulfillment of Jesus’ Promise

Before ascending to heaven, Jesus promised His disciples that they would receive power from the Holy Spirit,

Acts 1:8  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

After his resurrection Jesus had instructed His disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they were “clothed with power from on high”

Luke 24:45-49  45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

The Events of Pentecost

Acts 2:1-4 2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

As noted above this was a special festival day and there were many who had traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate. The crowds in the street heard to commotion of the disciples speaking in tongues. Many were able to hear what was being said in their own languages.

Acts 2:5-8

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

Peter took the opportunity to preach to the crowd.

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say

He proceeds to give the basic message of salvation in Jesus.

Acts 2:38- 40 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Significance of Pentecost for the Church

The Birth of the Church

The Holy Spirit’s descent marks the birth of the Christian Church, as believers were empowered to spread the gospel

Acts 2:41  Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Empowerment for Mission

Pentecost empowered the apostles to boldly proclaim the gospel, fulfilling the Great Commission

Matthew 28:19-20. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

The Universal Nature of the Gospel

The gift of tongues at Pentecost symbolized the universal nature of the gospel, transcending cultural and linguistic boundaries

Acts 2:5-12 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,[a] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

It is a fulfillment of God’s promise to pour out His Spirit on all flesh.

Joel 2:28  And afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.

The Role of the Holy Spirit in Believers’ Lives

  Indwelling of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit indwells believers, guiding them in truth, and transforming them into the image of Christ.

John 16:13   But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

Romans 8:9-11 9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[a] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of[b] his Spirit who lives in you.

Gifts of the Spirit

Pentecost introduced the gifts of the Holy Spirit, given for the edification of the church.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Conclusion

Ephesians 3:16-19 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.

Pentecost was a pivotal event in Christian history, marking the birth of the Church and the empowerment of believers for mission through the Holy Spirit. The presence in all believers is with us today.
